Ion-Exchange Membrane Stability in Redox Flow Battery Research

Undergraduate research symposium work studying electrochemical approaches to evaluating membrane stability in redox flow batteries.

Joshua D. Parr, Charles R. Leroux, Gary M. Koenig · UVA AMS REU, Department of Chemical Engineering · Collaborative research poster — public summary

Research context

The undergraduate symposium poster examined methods for determining chemical stability of ion-exchange membranes used in redox flow battery applications.

Methods and reported findings

The team investigated open-circuit voltage and cyclic voltammetry using three-electrode arrangements and different electrode and bridge materials. Reported OCV data were consistent with the Nernst equation under the tested setup, while cyclic-voltammetry results in nonstandard setups remained inconclusive.
